Streaming Supplier for outdoor Sports coverage
In 2024, MSG Broadcast was tasked with providing the complete technical production for a series of UK motocross tournaments. The project presented a classic challenge in outdoor sports broadcasting: how to capture dynamic, high-speed action across a vast course and deliver a professional live stream to a global audience.
To achieve comprehensive coverage, we deployed an 8-camera system featuring a versatile mix of Blackmagic URSA Broadcasts, Sony FX6s, and discreet micro-cameras for unique track-side perspectives. Signal integrity across the large site was maintained using a robust fibre optic network, with some runs extending up to 800 metres. This entire operation was coordinated from our OB van, the production hub where our team managed live vision mixing, instant replays of critical moments, dynamic graphics for standings, and the integration of sponsor content.
Reliable connectivity is paramount for any live stream, yet it's often the biggest hurdle in remote locations. We overcame this by deploying our bespoke bonded internet solution, combining Starlink, Peplink, and Mikrotik technologies to create a stable, high-bandwidth connection for the stream where none previously existed. Beyond the core race coverage, we focused on enhancing the narrative of the event - supplying a roving operator with a gimbal-mounted Sony FX3 captured dynamic interviews with athletes and key personnel. This content was edited on-site and integrated seamlessly into the broadcast, creating a more engaging and immersive experience for viewers.
This motocross series served as a powerful demonstration of a versatile and robust broadcasting / streaming model. The combination of long-range fibre, a self-contained OB van, and guaranteed bonded connectivity forms a blueprint that can be adapted to any large-scale outdoor event. The fundamental challenges of distance, infrastructure, and connectivity are universal in live sports, and our proven methodology is designed to solve them.
