Sony BRC-AM7 AI Auto-Framing PTZ Camera — Dry Hire

The Sony BRC-AM7 is a 4K PTZ camera that frames the shot itself. It pairs a 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor and a 20x optical zoom with Sony’s built-in PTZ Auto Framing, so it will find a presenter, hold a sensible composition and follow them around a stage without an operator on the pan bars.

That matters for the kind of job where a camera operator is either unaffordable or simply in the way: multi-day conferences, lecture capture, council and board meetings, houses of worship, sports halls, and permanently rigged studio and boardroom positions. One PoE++ cable carries power, control and an NDI or SRT stream, so a single Cat6 run from the rack is often the entire install.

What separates it from the cheap end of the PTZ market is that it is built as a broadcast camera first. The 1-inch sensor and variable ND give it depth and exposure control a 1/2.8-inch conference camera cannot match, S-Cinetone and S-Log3 mean it intercuts with Sony’s cinema bodies, and 12G-SDI, genlock and timecode let it drop into a proper multi-camera rig rather than living on its own.

How the auto framing actually works

It is worth being specific here, because “AI tracking” means very different things on different cameras. The BRC-AM7 will frame a single subject, or up to eight people with a primary and secondary subjects, choosing the secondary ones by proximity. The primary subject can be set by face registration or from the web app, and you can set the subject size across 150 steps from full body to a close-up, with an adjustable lead room so the framing sits naturally when someone walks.

Everything runs in the camera. There is no separate tracking box to rig and no extra licence to buy, and the tracking can be paused and resumed from the web interface, so a director can take manual control at any point and hand it back. Later firmware adds a basketball mode for indoor 5v5 games, which frames play rather than a named player and expects the camera at the centre of the sideline.

Two honest caveats. Auto framing is a very good first camera or a very good only camera, but it is not a substitute for an operator on a show where the cut depends on anticipation. And internal recording and the 4K 120p mode are not available when the camera is running on PoE++ — if you need either, plan for local 12V DC.

BRC-AM7 or FR7?

We hire both Sony PTZ bodies and they answer different briefs. Take the BRC-AM7 when the camera has to run itself — conferences, lecture capture, worship, sport, meeting rooms — or when a single network cable has to do everything, or when 20x reach from the back of a hall matters more than shallow depth of field.

Take the Sony FR7 when the look is the point. It is a full-frame Cinema Line body with interchangeable E-mount lenses, so it cuts invisibly against an FX6 or FX9 and delivers the shallow, filmic depth a drama, commercial or high-end corporate film expects from a robotic position. It is not an auto-framing camera, and it is not a one-cable install.

Plenty of jobs want both: FR7s on the beauty positions and an AM7 covering a wide or a roaming presenter. Send us the running order and we will tell you what the rig actually needs.

Best for

  • Conferences, AGMs and multi-day events with no camera operator on every position

  • Lecture capture, training rooms and council or board meetings

  • Houses of worship and school halls where volunteers run the kit

  • Sports halls and indoor court sports

  • Permanent studio, boardroom and webcast-studio installs on a single Cat6 run

  • Remote production, where the camera is controlled from somewhere else entirely

  • Wide and safety angles alongside operated cameras on a multi-camera shoot
